Well-known Cambodian journalist, his friend donate more bicycles to poor students in rural area

Kampong Speu province (Dec 15, 2014) – Two generous Cambodian benefactors who devoted their own resources to the support for education of rural schoolchildren donated more bicycles, books and pens to poor rural students today.

Mr. Chhay Sophal, Editor-in-Chief for Cambodia News and Author of the book: “Who Are the 36 Cambodian Prime Minister?” and his friend Mr. Touch Menglay gifted five bicycles to five students from the poorest families in Dambouk Roung commune, Phnom Sruoch district of Kampong Speu province. Of the total, Mr. Sophal donated 3 bikes, while the rest donated by Mr. Menglay. In additions, each student received 10 notebooks and two pens from Mr. Menlay and 10,000 riels in cash from Mr. Sophal.

Speaking at the distribution ceremony, Mr. Sophal advised the students to study hard and encouraged their parents to support their studies as much as possible. “Education can bring a better life in the future. Study hard today for a success tomorrow,” he said.

A 5th-grader Horn Thim, 10, from Srae Cheung Reastr village of Dambouk Roung commune, was very content with the donations. Presently, Thim studies at a primary school near his village, some 4 km from his house. He said that when he completed his primary level, he would continue his study at a lower secondary school located some 20 km from his village.
