Funded by the Government of Japan under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (KUSANONE), the new building was built to replace the deteriorated wooden thatched-roof building at Chrak Thnaot Primary and Lower Secondary School, some 30km from central Sameakki Meanchey. Additionally, the old broken roofs of two existing buildings were also completely replaced, while two latrines of 8 rooms and three rainwater catchment systems were constructed, and one 6-room latrine was renovated. The project also included teachers’ desks, chairs and students’ tables, blackboards and furniture.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, LWD Executive Director Mr. Min Sor expressed his sincere gratitude to the government and the people of Japan for their generous support to improve education sector in Cambodia.

He said that LWD had many duties to serve and improve the livelihood of the rural community through its integrated program covering multi-sectors and improving access to primary education was one among the sectors. Based on its long term vision, LWD is committed to working with the poor and vulnerable people in order to rebuild their community centres and improve their living standards, and also join hands with the government to develop the country. He also deeply thanked the local authorities at all level for their good cooperation to make the project possible.

Mr. Wada Takayuki, Secretary, Economic and ODA Section, Embassy of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia, said that ensuring access to compulsory education was very important for all the students in Cambodia in order to build up their educational path from primary education.

He said understanding the importance of education for achieving development of human resources, the Government of Japan has been supporting Cambodia’s efforts through the construction of school buildings and the training of teachers since 1990s.

The project created a favourable condition for about 500 primary and lower secondary students and teachers to study and teach in a safe and comfortable environment. “I am hopeful that all the students of this school will be able to complete their study under the improved environment,” he said.

H.E Hy Nat, Deputy Governor of Kampong Chhnang province, who presided over the ceremony, deeply thanked LWD for its effort to mobilize resources to build the schools in the area. He highly appreciated LWD that plays an important role in the support for rural development in the province. He also expressed, on behalf of the local authority and the community, his sincere gratitude to the government and the people of Japan for their generous support.

He appealed to the local authorities at all levels and the communities to maintain the school facilities for long-term use.
