Kampong Speu province (Dec 14, 2014) – Former LWD staff Mr. Soy Kimsorn distributed bicycles, books and pens to the poorest students in Thpong and Aoral districts of Kampong Speu province today. The donation, which was channeled through LWD, aimed to reduce difficulties of the poorest students who live far away from schools.

Speaking at the distribution ceremony at Prey Thom Primary school in Reaksmei Sameakki commune of Aoral district, Mr. Kimsorn encouraged parents to send their children to school and support their studies as much as possible. “The most valuable asset is knowledge,” he said, adding that children of rural farmers also can become engineers, doctors, or teachers.

To support rural education, 17 bicycles were donated to the poorest students whose houses are located afar from school and have no bicycles. Of the total, 13 bikes were donated by Mr. Kimsorn’s family, 3 donated by his friends, and one by LWD field staff in Aoral district. In additions, each student received 6 notebooks and 6 pens.

LWD Area Program Manger Mr. San Vinich expressed his sincere thanks to Mr. Kimsorn’s family and his friends for their generous support for education of poor children in rural areas.

A 7th-grader San Visal, 14, from Prey Thom village of Aoral district, expressed his contentment with the generous donation. “I am very happy to get this bike,” Visal said, adding that he was committed to complete grade 12.

Without a bicycle, Visal has to get up early in the morning and walk 10km from his house to a lower secondary school. Visal, the oldest son in a poor family of five children, dreams to become a doctor.

Beun Phanith, 11, from Sangkae Chrum village of Reaksmei Sameakki commune, also expressed the same excited feelings. Phanith passed her primary school for the academic year 2013-2014 and was expecting to pursue her study at the lower secondary school which was opened since mid-October. But, without a bicycle she missed her class for almost two months until today.

“I have a bicycle now. I am very happy. I will be able to go to school tomorrow,” said Phanith, whose house is 8km far away from the school.

This is the second time that Mr. Kimsorn donated bicycles to the poorest students in rural areas. In 2012, he donated 12 bicycles, books, pens and schoolbags to 12 poorer students at Amleang Lower Secondary School in Thpong district.
