LWD distributes food, water purifiers to flood victims in Kampong Chhnang

Kampong Chhnang (October 20, 2011) – Life With Dignity (LWD) today distributed food, rice and water purifiers worth US$35,000 to 979 families affected by flood in Kampong Laeng and Chulkiri districts of Kampong Chhnang province.

The humanitarian aid was donated by ACT Alliance upon an appeal for emergency relief made by its member—ACT Cambodia Forum which comprised LWD, Church World Service (CWS), DanChurchAid/Christian Aid (DCA/CA) and FinnChurchAid (FCA).

The aid, which was administered by LWD in cooperation with CWS, DCA/CA and FCA and under  the strong support of the Provincial Committee for Disaster Management (PCDM), aimed to release sufferings of the flood-affected people.

LWD Executive Director Dr. Sam Inn expressed his sympathy for the flood victims whose houses and rice paddies were destroyed by flooding since August. He encouraged them to overcome all difficulties caused by flood.

“Please, everyone, do not lose hope. Be prepared to cope with new challenges which may turn out in the coming days before the floods recede,” Dr. Inn said, advising them to take care of themselves and especially their young children from being drowned.

He added that LWD and its donor partners also considered the recovery assistance after flood to support their farming activities by providing them with rice and vegetable seeds.

He also deeply thanked the local authorities at all levels which provided strong support to LWD Emergency Response Team to successfully accomplish the flood impact rapid assessment work and the aid distributions today.

H.E Mr. Touch Marim, Kampong Chhnang Provincial Governor, who presided over the distribution ceremony at Prolay Meas pagoda, Prolay Meas Commune of Kampong Laeng, expressed his deep thanks to ACT Alliance and its members for their generous support to Cambodian flood victims.

Each family received a kit of 25kg of husked rice, 15 cans of canned fish, 2 liters of cooking oil, 1kg of ionic salts, and a 13-liter water purifier.

The floods hitting Cambodia since August have affected 1.2 million people, killed 247 people, and destroyed 230,000 hectares of paddy fields, according to National Committee for Disaster Management.
