Community representatives, Civil Society Organizations raise their concerns at National Advocacy Conference

Phnom Penh (Dec 07, 2012) –Community representatives from 19 provinces across the country and representatives from more than 18 civil society organizations, making a total of about 300 people, met today at the 7th Annual National Advocacy Conference to raise issues and concerns over the serious adverse impacts on natural resources administration and provide recommendations for the government for further improvement.

The Conference is presided over by H.E Yim Chhay Ly, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Council for Agricultural and Rural Development.

Key issues raised at the conference included (i) impacts of extraction industry; (ii)  identification of indigenous groups; (iii) forest management; (iv) urban development, resettlement and forced eviction; and (v) land registration and land conflict.

Life With Dignity (LWD), one of the conference organizing committee members, also assisted some representatives from the affected communities under its target areas in Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Speu, Pursat and Battambang provinces to attend the conference and share their concerns over the procedure and challenges of indigenous people identification.

The Conference which was jointly organized by 18 NGOs under the theme “Working together for Good Governance of Land and Natural Resources in Cambodia” aimed to (i) provide community representatives, civil society, government officials, lawmakers, private sector and development partners with an opportunity to have a constructive dialogue on key emerging issues related to good administration of land and natural resources in Cambodia and (ii) collectively formulate key policy recommendations and suggestions to the Cambodian government and lawmakers, the civil society and the communities in contribution to the national development plan and ensuring full and good governance of land and natural resources.

This year the Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee and the NGO Forum on Cambodia lead the event.
