ACT Forum Cambodia members receive capacity building training on emergency response

Phnom Penh (August 31, 2012) – Members from ACT Forum Cambodia gained more knowledge and understanding about ACT Emergency response system at a two-day workshop, held in Phnom Penh on August 30-31.

Ms. Mao Sophal, Program Manager of Church World Service (CWS) said, “Before, we just followed the guideline to make an appeal and response to the emergency, but today we had an opportunity to seek clarification on what we were in doubt from the trainer.”

“I learned more about the process of appeal to Act Alliance for emergency assistance. I am sure that I gained more knowledge from this training,” she said, adding she would apply the knowledge to help the vulnerable Cambodians to get prepared and protect themselves when disaster strikes.

The training workshop, organized by Life With Dignity (LWD) and supported by the Finn Church Aid (FCA), aimed to raise the awareness on ACT Alliance Emergency Response Policy. It also provided a good opportunity for the ACT Forum Cambodia members to have a clear and common understanding on the revised ACT emergency response system and be able to apply it correctly during emergencies.

There were 20 participants attending the workshop. They were from member organizations of ACT Forum Cambodia which included LWD, CWS, FCA, Dan Church Aid/Christian Aid, HEKS, and Dikonia and ICCO who missed the workshop. Representatives from Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission, an observing member of ACT Alliance and a local NGO Partnership for Development in Kampuchea (PADEK), non-member of ACT Forum Cambodia, also joined the training.

Mr. Kep Kannaro, Executive Director of PADEK, expressed his strong interest in the training and said he gained more understanding about how ACT and ACT Forums members work. “I understood more how to prepare proposal for appeal,” he said.

The participants highly valued the course and committed to taking back the concept to apply at their work places.

Ms. Kaisa-Leena Juvonen, Humanitarian Coordinator for FCA, said, “I’m hoping that with this training, ACT members would know the ACT emergency response and appeal mechanism. They would be able to be faster to response and use it and appeal for the fund in an accountable and transparent manner.”

“Moreover, they would be able to serve the Cambodian people in need in emergency case,” she said, adding that she appreciated the good spirit of partnership and joining the capacity building between the ACT alliance and ACT Forum Cambodia and it was very important.
