Three Agricultural Development Cooperatives Established under LWD Support

Kampong Chhnang (23-Jun-2011) – Three Agricultural Development Cooperatives (ADC) in three communes, Teuk Phos district of Kampong Chhnang province received licenses from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishery, and Forestry today, after each ADC’s structure complied with the ADC Royal Decree.

AC_KC_001The Cooperatives, named “Khbal Teuk Chhean Leung (KCADC)”, ”Peam Mean Chey (PMCADC)”, and “Ponleu Samaki (PACO)” , were set up after an over 7 months-long preparation under the support of Life With Dignity (LWD) in close collaboration with the Department of Agriculture in Kampong Chhnang.

LWD Executive Director, Dr Sam Inn said in his speech that this establishment was the joint efforts of LWD and the Department of Agriculture in Kampong Chhnang. “ADC plays very important role to make economic growth by linking our rural communities to the markets” he said.

“LWD will continue to strengthen and support these cooperatives and help address challenges when the cooperatives faces and to ensure their functioning,” he said, adding that LWD supported the establishment of 6 ADCs, including 3 from last year in Kampong Chhnang and it planned 2 more in the future.

In his speech, His Excellency Chan Sarun, Minister of Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery (MAFF), strongly appreciated the support of LWD to set up these ADCs.

He said the ADCs would help their members in their farming business. “To ensure the sustainability and good-functioning of the ACDs, capacity building and other leadership skills will be needed to provide to their leaders and members,” he said.

These ADCs currently made up of 509 members (305 Females) from 3 communes with total capital of 10,370,000 Riels, accrued from selling shares to members. Today, each ADC received a capital of 8,000,000 Riels from LWD.

To become a member of each ADC, each farmer is required to pay membership fee of 3,000 riels (US$0.75) and buy at least a share worth 10,000 riels (US$2.50), according to their by-law and ADC Royal Decree. Each member can own a maximum of 100 shares.
