All of them highly valued the course and would bring back the concept to apply at their work place. “We have learned a lot about the rights based empowerment and advocacy from Life with dignity. We really gained more understandings on how to mainstream human rights into the development program,” they said.

Each of them holds different positions such as education, agriculture, planning, and rural and gender development.

The training, which was facilitated by Mr. Chhuon Vuthy, LWD Human Resource Manager and Mr. Sok Sambath, LWD Senior Human Development Advisor, aimed to share the common understandings and experiences with the participants in RBA practices and its implication in Laos and Cambodia.

To gain more insight into the development from a rights-based perspective, these 2 facilitators will do an exposure visit to Laos from May 1 to 8, 2011 in order to contextualize the necessary, relevant information and lessons learned from NGOs, Government officials and villagers. The findings from the visit will be used to develop the curriculums for a series of training courses to be conducted in August, September and October this year.

The courses to be designed included:

  1. Participatory Methods in Poverty Reduction;
  2. Community Organizing and Development; and
  3. Sustainable Livelihood Approach.
