Flood victims get relief from LWF Cambodia

Pursat (Oct 27, 2010) – Forty-five out of 604 families affected by floods in Phnom Kravanh district of Pursat province received emergency relief from LWF Cambodia today.

The relief came from small contributions of LWF Cambodia staff and Phnom Kravanh District Governor Mr. Touch Sambo. It was complementary to the government’s support in response to the urgent needs of these victims.

Each family received a kit of 25kg of rice, 3 bottles of fish sauce, 3 bottles of soybean sauce, and a bottle of vegetable oil. The contributions totaled 2,664,000 riels (US$650), of which 2,097,000 riels (US$511) was contributed by LWF Cambodia staff.

The floods, which resulted from days of heavy rain in the second week of Oct, inundated ten thousands of hectares of rice paddy in 13 provinces northwestern Cambodia. Ten thousands of families faced food shortages. According to the National Committee for Disaster Management, 10,000 hectares of paddy were destroyed and 8 people were killed. Total damage was estimated at $70 million.
