LWSIT supports flood victims

India (August 09, 2013) - The Lutheran World Service India Trust (LWSIT) extended various support to over four thousand families of Barpeta district of Assam, who were hard hit by the flood. The organization extended different supports like temporary shelter materials (high quality HDPE Tarpaulin sheets), food and non-food items to the flood affected persons of that area through financial support from ACT Alliance under the ACT Appeal. The ACT Appeal project extended immediate emergency response for life-saving and life-sustaining assistance to flood families. The organization extended support to socially and economically marginalized groups such as Dalits and minority groups like Muslims. Meanwhile, the LWSIT launched ‘Food for Work’ projects in the flood affected Assam state to support the victims for their livelihoods. In order to reduce the food insecurity, LWSIT supported communities in 10 villages of Mandia Circle covering 1,144 families through the project. LWSIT distributed 70,000 kgs of boiled rice and 7,000 kgs of Lentil in the area. In turn, communities repaired their village roads to make them accessible to local markets and schools for children. Besides several earthen mounds were constructed at the close vicinity of village where people can shelter their cattle, other livestock, etc. while family members would be shifted there during the time of flood. All these initiatives were taken considering disaster risk reduction features which can further strengthen the process of response program. During the program implementation, gender dimension was highly emphasized by facilitating the works for women those are conducive for them.
