The new building, which is located some 80km from Aoral district town, was funded by Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS)/AusAid. The construction project, which was administered by LWD, aimed to improve access to basic health care service for the rural poor community, especially women and children.

H.E Professor Eng Huot, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Health, who presided over the ceremony, expressed his deep thanks to LWD, ALWS and the Australian people for their generous donation and support to the government’s policy to improve the health sector in rural Cambodia.

He requested the community to take part in the protection and maintenance of the achievements for a longer use. He also asked the local authority at all levels to further strengthen cooperation with development partners in the area.

H.E Chan Dara, Deputy Governor of Kampong Speu, highly appreciated the achievement and efforts made by LWD over the past years. The government always considers NGOs as the most important development partners which contribute to the development of the country, he said.

LWD Executive Director Dr. Sam Inn said improving health sector was one of the key components of LWD’s Integrated Rural Development through Empowerment Program.

Dr. Inn sincerely thanked the Health Department and Ministry for providing technical support to the construction of the building. He also deeply thanked ALWS, Australians and concerned stakeholders who supported the project.

On behalf of the community, Dr. Inn requested that the number of medical staff working at the center, which currently has only five nurses and a midwife, should be increased. He also requested the health center staff to provide more support to village health support focal persons.

The new building was constructed in late 2012 and completed in May 2013 and its design followed the national standard specification. It was built to replace an old wooden building funded by DCA in 1999 and is a complement to a small and narrow old building constructed in 2008, funded by ALWS.

The new building was fully equipped with office supply and equipment including some basic facilities such as a generator, deep well, water pumping machine, rain harvest system, and so on.

With a complete set of facilities, the former Trapeang Chour Health Post today was upgraded to a Health Center which will benefit at least 2,508 households with a total population of 10,793, half of them are female, in 23 villages of the commune.
