LWD inaugurates new school building in Pursat province

Phnom Kravanh (June 27, 2012) – LIFE WITH DIGNITY (LWD) today inaugurated a new concrete school building of 3 classrooms for poor students in the remote area of Ta Deh village, Samraong commune of Phnom Kravanh district in Pursat province.

school-inau-pk04Mr. Mok Ra, Deputy Governor of Pursat, who presided over the ceremony, deeply thanked LWD and Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS), as well as the people and the government of Australia for their kind contribution to reducing the poverty of rural Cambodians.

He encouraged the community to maintain the school building for a longer use for the next generation. He also requested ALWS to continue its support to build more school buildings in Pursat as well as other rural area in Cambodia.

H.E. Ly Narun, Member of Parliament for Pursat constituency highly appreciated today’s achievement and deeply thanked LWD and ALWS for their contributions and good cooperation with the government to improving the education system in rural areas of Cambodia.

The school project was funded by ALWS. It cost US$ 36,310, including the contribution in-kind (labor and some wooden materials) from the community, worth US$1,100. The project also included teachers’ desks and chairs, students’ tables, a 3-room latrine, a flag pole, school gate and barbed-wire fence, and children playthings. The project aimed to contribute to improving the access to primary education in rural remote areas.

Ms. Narelle Bodwen-Ford, Asia/Pacific Program Officer for ALWS, said, “LWD and ALWS believe that education is an important tool to change and develop the community.”
