FCA donates new school building in Kampong Speu

Kampong Speu (May 31, 2012) – Life with Dignity (LWD) today held a ground breaking ceremony to construct a new concrete school building of 4 classrooms for poor students in a remote area of Thpong district in Kampong Speu province.

The current deteriorated zinc building to be replaced.

The new building will replace the current deteriorated zinc building which accommodates 130 students—51 of whom are girls—in Daun Tip village, Prambei Mom commune of Thpong district, Kampong Speu province.

The school project cost US$ 67,320, of which US$ 66,320 was funded by Finn Church Aid (FCA) and US$ 1,000 was contributed by the local community.

The project also included teachers’ desks and chairs, students’ tables, one latrine, a flag pole, school gate and barbed-wire fence, a water tank of 1,000 litres, lightning protection system, furniture for library including reading books, and children playthings. One of the four rooms will be used as a library room. It is expected to be completed in September 2012.

The project aimed to contribute to improving the access to primary education in rural remote areas.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Khim Vichet, LWD Area Program Manager based in Thpong said education was very important for all of us, especially for our next generation. He also asked villagers to actively participate in maintaining the school building and other facilities for longer use.

Mr. Loek Sothea, Program Coordinator of FCA, encouraged parents to send their children to school and regularly monitor their study at home. He also requested the contractor to speed up the construction work and ensure the good quality of the work.

Mr. Ou Seng, Deputy District Governor of Thpong, highly appreciated the strong support of LWD and deeply thanked all donors, especially FCA for supporting the school project.
