The new building will replace the current deteriorated wooden building which accommodates 208 students—90 of whom are girls—in Chrey Krem village, Phteah Rung commune of Phnom Kravanh, some 22 km from the district town.

The school project cost US$ 53,600, of which US$ 52,100 was funded by Finn Church Aid (FCA) and US$ 1,500 was contributed by the local community.

The project also included teachers’ desks and chairs, students’ tables, three latrines, a flag pole, school gate and barbed-wire fence, deep well, furniture for library including reading books, and children playthings. One of the four rooms will be used as a library room. It is expected to be completed in August 2012.

The project aimed to contribute to improving the access to primary education in rural remote areas.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Mey Sarun, LWD Area Program Manager based in Phnom Kravanh said education was very important for all of us. LWD supports the government policy on “education for all”, aiming to meet the learning needs of all children, youth and adults by 2015.

He also encouraged parents to send their children to school and regularly monitor their study. “Please, as parents think long term about the future of your children and be more responsible for them,” he said.

Mr. Mom Sarath, Deputy District Governor of Phnom Kravanh, highly appreciated the strong support of LWD and deeply thanked all donors, especially FCA for supporting the school project.

He also requested the contractor to speed up the construction work and ensure the good quality of the work.

Since LWD included Phnom Kravanh into its targets areas in 2009, two concrete school buildings of 6 classrooms were built. Two more concrete school buildings of 9 classrooms are planned for 2012, according Mr. Sarun.
