The contract was made under the Japanese Grant assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (“KUSANONE”) which aimed to help Cambodia’s reconstruction and development efforts at the grass roots levels in key sectors including the education and health.

“Investment in education is the right and long term investment. It will lead to build human capital of Cambodia and bring hope and sustainable growth for the next generation of this country,” said Dr. Sam Inn, LWD Executive Director. “I am very pleased to learn that the KUSANONE grant puts its focus on education among others.”

“We are happy to be in partnership with the KUSANONE grant to bring hope and a better future to rural children and looking forward to continued broader partnership to help more people,” Dr. Inn said.

The construction the two school buildings equipped with school furniture—one of five classrooms and the other of four— are expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

At the signing ceremony at the Japanese Embassy, Mr. Kawamura Hiroshi, Deputy Chief of Mission/Minister, Embassy of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia, said that education and human resources development were a foundation for future development of Cambodia.

“I hope that this project will encourage the children at Anhaseh Primary School and Peam Primary School to study much harder for themselves as well as for the development of their mother country,” Mr. Kawamura said.

Currently there are 400 students in all studying at Peam Primary School in Komar Meas and Anhaseh Primary Schools in Anhaseh, according to Mr. Khim Vichet, Area Program Manager for LWD. But, the two buildings, which were built of wood in 1993, are getting deteriorated and interrupting the study of the children in the areas, especially in the rainy season.

The 5-classroom building will be built in Komar Meas Village, Amleang Commune, Thpong District, about 100km from Phnom Penh and 80km from the provincial town. The 4-classroom building will be built in Anhaseh village, Toap Mean Commune of the same district, some 90km from Phnom Penh and 40km from the provincial town.
