LWD distributes more food, rice seed to flood victims in Kampong Chhnang and Battambang

Kampong Chhnang (December 27, 2011) – Life With Dignity (LWD) today distributed more food and rice seeds worth US$220,665 to 3,735 families affected by flood in Battambang and Kampong Chhnang provinces.

This is the third time that LWD pooled resources locally and internationally in order to help Cambodian flood victims.

The humanitarian aid was donated by the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), channeled through DanChurchAid/Christian Aid (DCA/CA).

The aid, which was administered by LWD in cooperation with DCA/CA and under the strong support of the Provincial Committee for Disaster Management (PCDM), aimed to release sufferings of the flood-affected people.

As the aid was limited, families who were mostly affected by flood and received less donations to date were selected as the recipients. They included 1,371 families from 3 communes in Kampong Laeng and 4 communes in Chulkiri districts of Kampong Chhnang and 2,364 families from 10 communes of 2 districts of Moung Russei and Sangkae in Battambang.

Speaking at the distribution ceremony at Wat Srah Chark in Kampong Chhnang, Mr. Chan Vibol, LWD Program Manager, said today’s donation was a contribution of ECHO, DCA/CA and LWD to relieve the difficulties of the flood-affected people. He said that was an additional assistance for the recovery stage after flood.

H.E Oun Sam Ol, Kampong Chhnang Deputy Governor, expressed his deep thanks to ECHO, DCA/CA and LWD for supporting the government in mitigating the sufferings of the flood victims this year.

Each family received a kit of 50kg of husked rice, 1 liter of cooking oil, 1 kg of ionic salts, 900g of detergent, 1 packet of Diarrhea Treatment (Orasel), and 30 tablets of water purifier. In addition, of the total, each of 1,646 families who are famers received 40 kg of rice seeds.

At another distribution ceremony in the morning of the next day at Wat Pralay Meas in Pralay Meas commune of Kampong Laeng district, Mr. Chhuon Vuthy, who represented LWD, expressed his profound thanks to the local authorities at all levels for their strong support to enable LWD’s working group to successfully complete their tasks. He suggested that all those who live in the flood-prone areas pay higher attentions to the preparedness work in order to cope with upcoming risks through the increase of agricultural production after flood to ensure food security for next year and improving hygiene by drinking boiled water or purified water, especially taking care of their children’s health.

H.E Ke Chanmony, parliamentarian for Kampong Chhnang constituency, praised and appreciated that LWD was a strong force for quickly accelerating the development work to bring welfare for the poor people.

At the distribution ceremony on Dec 28 at Wat Kampong Preah, Sangkae district of Battambang, H.E Prach Chann, Battambang Governor, also deeply thanked LWD and its donor/partner for continuing to help the flood victims in the province.
