The humanitarian aid, which channeled through LWD/LWF, was donated by actalliance aiming to release sufferings of Cambodian displaced victims. The aid was administered by LWD to address the emerging needs of the victims in cooperation with the National Committee for Disaster Management, DanChurchAid/Chrsitian Aid, and Church World Service.

Dr. Sam Inn, Executive Director of LWD, said, “We cannot ignore their sufferings. As we are a humanitarian organization, we must try our best to help them as much as we can.”

He added that LWD’s goal is to contribute to poverty alleviation in Cambodia through empowerment, strengthening of civil society, leadership and governance. “Our contribution today definitely reflects our goal,” he said.

According to Mr. Chan Vibol, Program Manager of LWD, who leads the LWD Emergency Response Team, 2,420 out of 2,678 families who are staying at Takueng Displaced People Camp in Kulen district were identified by the joint assessment team as the most vulnerable families. They were classified into two groups—the first group consisted of 697 families of which each family has more than 3 female members, and the second group consisted of 1,723 families.

Each of the family in the first group received a kit of 30 cans of canned fish, 1kg of dried salted fish, 2 liters of cooking oil, 2 bottles of soybean sauce, 2 bottles of fish sauce, 2kg of dried sweet radish, 2kg of pumpkin, 2kg of cabbage, 2kg of onion, and 2kg of wax gourd. Each family in the second group received by category a kit of some of the 9 items the first group received and it’s worth 42,000 riels (US$10.40). This is the second time that LWD made donation.

Ms. Chun Phally from Sen Chey village, Kantuot commune, Chaom Ksan district, near the border, said her family was told to leave the village immediately on the first day of the fighting.

“I and my two children were very frightened when we sounded the shooting,” said Phally whose son is 16 and daughter, 8.Today, after receiving a kit of food donated by LWD, Phally packed all her stuff and loaded on an engine cart to leave the camp, even though the local authority has not yet told her to do. “I decided to go back home now. My brother, a soldier defending on the Preah Vihear temple told me the fighting has stopped,” she said, adding that she needs to go home to take care of her three cows, while her 20 ducks and chickens died.

“Though I got some humanitarian aid from the government, local and international NGOs, generous people inside and outside of the country, staying in the camp is not as comfortable as at our house,” she said. She got six donations in total during 20 days in the camp.

I’m very happy to get this donation. Thank you, LWD, for helping us.
