Emergency and Environment Experts Meet at 14th AZEECON Summit

Siem Reap, Cambodia (Oct 13, 2010) – Experts from Asia Zone Emergency and Environment Cooperation Network (AZEECON) met in Siem Reap, Cambodia on 12-14 Oct to discuss and exchange ideas, share experience and further strengthen cooperation among AZEECON members. David H. Mueller, LWF Regional Representative and AZEECON Focal Person, said that AZEECON played more active roles in building capacities of professional staff of its members in order to develop their country programs. Each year, AZEECON provides at least four capacity building training courses to its concerned professional staff, of which each course comprises about 100 participants. The last training workshop on Gender Mainstreaming from Rights-based Perspective was conducted last August in Phnom Penh. “Today’s meeting will discuss how we can all work together regionally to support the government to improve the livelihood of the rural poor,” he said, adding that over the past years, AZEECON had close cooperation with Cambodia’s National Committee for Disaster Management and significant achievements had been made under funding support from EU’s DIPECHO. AZEECON, established in 1997, aims to promote more active participations of its members in emergency and environment work through the strengthening of capacities of involved staff. AZEECON members included RDRS Bangladesh, LWF Cambodia, LWF India Trust, LWF Nepal, and two new members—LWF Indonesia and LWF Myanmar—which just joined the membership in 2010. “AZEECON will continue to further strengthen cooperation with government line agencies in an effort to accelerate the process of poverty reduction of the rural poor,” he added.
